FISHING TIPS

It's really the simple things that will help you catch more fish in the Spring.  Fresh baits as opposed to frozen.  Getting clams still in their shells rather than plastic containers work best in the surf this time of year.  Of course fresh bunker chunks will get you Blues if they are anywhere close as well as the occasional Striper.  Fishing the Tides are always important.  As of late, two hours before the incoming seems to be the ticket.  You can check out NIXON WATCHES as well as FREESTYLE.  These watches are geared towards surfers.  They have programmable Tide tables and of course are water proof.  If you do a lot of Surf fishing you may want to hint about liking them around the house knowing Father's day is approaching.

I also advocate using Sliders or Fishfinders when dead sticking this time of the year.  Bass are still sluggish due to the cold water.  They will lip a bait a few times before finally picking it up and making off with it.  If they feel the resistance of the weight there is a good chance they will drop it and move on. Another thing that is overlooked in the Spring are hooks.  Make sure your hooks are sharp.  Even some hooks right off the shelf don't meet my standards for a sharp hook.  I prefer OWNER Hooks, but really, any hook in you tackle box can be can use a little file work before you put it out there in the water.  You will be surprised  how much your catch rate goes up.  This time of year a lot of people simply pull out their metal spoons or Hopkins lures after they have been in the box all winter and throw them out for blues.  Sure you will catch your share when their around but you'll also feel hits without hooking up due to dull rusty hooks.

Make sure you check the size and bag limits of the fish your going after. Year after year I see people taking shorts or more fish than any one or even two families could use.  I suppose more of the catch becomes fertilizer. I now keep the Fish & Game number on my cell phone.  The people who work there will ask you a few questions when reporting illegal activity - things like was a car used - license, color - as well as the description of the people doing the illegal activity.  Here's their number to keep handy on your cell phone 800-222-8456.

Have a great time enjoying New Jersey.
